Favorite Things: Self Tanner

For those of us who can’t take a weekend trip to St. Barths this winter, it seems as though our skin is more likely to match up to Casper instead of Beyonce. The bronzed look makes a face look sexier (think VS models), thinner, and healthier. Bronzer is a great (and must-have) make-up bag item, but it doesn’t last all day. After a few hours it fades away, leaving you with the pale winter face you woke up with.

You have two options if you want the coveted glow: #1. carry & reapply your bronzer throughout the day or #2. apply self tanner the night before & relish in your semi-permanent glow. If you choose option #1 be sure to check out the all-so-fabulous NARS bronzer. It comes in three shades so you can match up the color palettes to your natural skin tone. Option #2 ends up being your best bet, & the best self-tanner is TanTowel. It comes in simple one-time-use packets that can be applied to both your face & body. The best part? They don’t smell bad! Make sure to exfoliate the area that you are tanning before you apply in order to get a deeper coating. If you don’t exfoliate before, you will be applying the self tanner to skin cells that are going to flake off soon. A great way to exfoliate your face before an application is by using the Clarisonic.

Once you apply the self tanner, be sure to thoroughly wash your hands so you don’t get the orange streaks on them.

Say goodbye to pale skin!

I LOVE sunless tanner but I’ve never tried the tan towel! I’ve been using Bare Essentials Faux Tan for a long time, mostly because I don’t mind the smell (like you implied, most sunless tanners smell terrible). I’ll have to check these out though.

Are they actual towels that your rub on you or is that just part of the name? I’ve had trouble in the past getting an even application with tanning wipes (the L’Oreal ones) but that could just be because they weren’t great quality to begin with…

      Hi Sarah,
Yes, they are actual fiber towelettes that contain a clear liquid self-tan formula the works with the proteins and amino acids to develop your unique natural shade. The Plus formula contains an added ingredient called erythrulose for a deeper sunless tan. Moisturizer in the formula allow for an evenly blended tan without any harsh lines.

It helps to exfoliate before to make sure your skin in nice and smooth. Apply in a circular motion over areas you would like to tan and on the larger areas first. Apply to face, neck, knees, ankles, and tops of hands lastly. Think of it like you are applying any other self-tanner, blend, blend, blend! Wash hands immediately after application. I hope this helps!
